Wyndham City Council is seeking a skilled and hands-on Senior Fleet Maintenance Officer to join our Fleet Management Services Unit. In this key operational role, you'll carry out maintenance and repair tasks across a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment to ensure they meet safety, quality, and productivity standards.
Acting as a senior technical lead within the workshop, you'll also play an important role in mentoring less experienced team members, supporting apprentices, and assisting the Team Leader Fleet Maintenance with day-to-day workshop operations. This is a great opportunity to bring your trade experience into a collaborative, safety-focused local government team committed to service excellence.
This is a full time permanent position that will require flexibility to work weekends, public holidays and additional hours as required, including provision of assistance with municipality emergencies/call outs. This role may be required to work at other sites across Wyndham City to meet operational and business requirements.
What your day will look like
• Carrying out programmed and reactive maintenance and repairs on Council’s fleet, including heavy plant, light vehicles, and small plant such as mowers and chainsaws, to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable operation
• Acting as a technical lead within the workshop by guiding and mentoring apprentices and colleagues, sharing your experience to build team capability and confidence
• Supporting the Team Leader Fleet Maintenance with day-to-day coordination of workshop operations, and stepping into a leadership role when required to keep schedules and standards on track
• Using diagnostic and electronic servicing tools to identify and resolve mechanical issues efficiently and in line with industry standards
• Preparing new fleet vehicles for service, including setup, inspection, and coordination with internal stakeholders to ensure readiness for operational use
• Contributing to a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment by maintaining tools and equipment, performing light fabrication tasks, and upholding OH&S obligations
• Communicating clearly and constructively with your team and leadership to support productivity, safety, and continuous improvement
• Promptly identifying and reporting faults, risks, or safety issues to uphold the integrity of the fleet and the wellbeing of the team
What you will bring
• Qualified in relevant trade and post-trade Certificate (e.g. special class trades) or equivalent and/or completed TAFE certificate course or equivalent
• Several years’ experience in a fleet or plant mechanical environment, including exposure to coordination, mentoring or informal leadership responsibilities
• Knowledge and experience in safe and competent operation, service and maintenance of heavy plant and equipment and small plant. (e.g., mowers, chainsaws)
• A strong understanding of safe work practices in a mechanical environment and a commitment to maintaining a high standard of workshop operation
• Proven ability to communicate effectively, work as part of a high-performing team, and contribute to a positive and safety-driven workplace culture
• A Victorian Driver’s Licence (Heavy Rigid drivers licence is desirable)
• Forklift License (desirable)
• High Risk Work License – Class DG (desirable)
